The significant announcement was made during the highly anticipated groundbreaking ceremony for the arena, which took place on Wednesday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. This event marks a major milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to develop world-class infrastructure that promotes culture, tourism, and the arts.

Rema, who was present in his hometown for a special homecoming concert at the iconic Ogbe Stadium, was a key figure in the ceremony. The artist took part in the event by laying the first block of the new arena, a symbolic act that further solidifies his strong ties to his roots in Edo State.

Governor Obaseki, in his address during the ceremony, expressed his immense satisfaction and pride in having the internationally acclaimed artist participate in this landmark occasion. The governor emphasized the significance of Rema’s presence, noting that it adds a personal and cultural resonance to the project.

“It was a great honor and pleasure to have our global music icon, Rema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena,” Obaseki shared via his social media platform, X, following the event. He further revealed that the arena, to be aptly named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ will be located at the historic site of the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City. This location was carefully chosen for its cultural significance and accessibility within the city.”

Governor Obaseki elaborated on the multi-purpose design of the Edo Arena, stating that it is intended to serve as a premier venue for a wide range of events. The arena will be capable of hosting large-scale concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other major gatherings, making it a versatile addition to the state’s infrastructure.

He highlighted the broader economic and cultural impact that the arena is expected to have, noting that it will play a crucial role in boosting tourism to Edo State. By attracting visitors to experience the rich cultural heritage of the state, the arena will also create significant employment opportunities for the youth, thereby contributing to the state’s overall development goals.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, has consistently been a proud ambassador of his Edo roots, often reflecting his heritage in his music. His connection to Benin City and the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire is a recurring theme in his work, resonating with both local and global audiences.

One of his recent chart-topping hits, “Benin Boys,” which features fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, is a vibrant tribute to Benin City and its rich cultural history. The song celebrates the spirit and resilience of the people of Edo State, while also honoring the enduring legacy of the ancient Benin Empire.
