Renowned singer, Joeboy, reflects on his past employment at a pure water factory during his university days, revealing how this experience fueled his ambition to become a celebrated artist.
During a recent interview on the Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast, Joeboy disclosed that working at a sachet water mill during a university strike played a pivotal role in shaping his determination to pursue a career in music.
Despite diligently searching for a job throughout the strike period, Joeboy faced numerous rejections. The artist expressed fear about the possibility of struggling to secure employment after completing his education.
In his own words, "I studied Human Resources and Personal Management. When I was in the university, there was a strike for like three months. So I decided to get a job, and I was searching for a job for like three months in the whole of Lagos. I did not get one single job. There was even a time I worked in a pure water factory as a marketer. At that point, I was like, ‘I’m looking so hard for a job and I can’t find any. Is this how I’m going to end up when I finish school?’ So that was also a trigger. I told myself, ‘You really have to make sure you make it [in the music industry]."
Joeboy referred to his life as a "miracle" and highlighted that despite some advising Mr. Eazi, the head of his former record label, against signing him, he ended up being signed to Empawa, where his music career blossomed.
Contrary to his parents' expectations, Joeboy ventured into a music career, achieving what he considers "the best label deal in Afrobeats history in Nigeria." He recently established his own record label, Young Legend, while still being associated with Empawa.
