Nigerian comedian, Seyi Law, recently opened up about his perspective on internet trolls and online backlash during a candid discussion on a talk show. His comments have sparked interest as he shared how he handles negative criticism in the age of social media.
When asked about how he deals with criticism from social media users, particularly given his transition from comedy to politics, Seyi Law did not hesitate to explain his approach. Speaking as a guest on HipTV, he mentioned that while he may respond to online attacks, he ensures that it doesn’t affect his personal life. He emphasized, “Internet trolls and backlash online, for me, even if I respond, it ends there. I don’t take it into my personal life; you don’t see me outside showing it on my face.”
Seyi further elaborated on his stance, saying, “Some would say that they are E-warriors; as long as I try to be compassionate and kind to people, I am in the right standing with my creator. Once I’m in the right standing with my creator, every other thing doesn’t matter.” This statement highlights his focus on maintaining his integrity and moral compass, regardless of external opinions.
The comedian also addressed a significant distinction between personal insults and what he considers defamation, urging individuals to be mindful of their words. He warned against making defamatory claims without evidence, pointing out the legal consequences that could arise. Seyi Law stated, “For those who reply and those who choose to arrest anyone that has defamed them, I don’t advise them otherwise. You can insult someone and you can abuse them, but don’t defame them. Don’t say they collected money when you didn’t see them collect money, don’t call them ashawo when you didn’t see them involved in prostitution.”
He concluded his thoughts by reiterating that while personal insults don’t affect him, defamation is a serious issue. “When a person insults me, those things don’t matter to me, that is your problem, but don’t defame. Don’t cross the boundary that will take you to jail. The ones that I feel I can reply to, I reply, and the ones that I don’t deem necessary, I ignore,” Seyi Law remarked, making it clear that he carefully chooses his battles when it comes to responding to online criticism.
