Edo's Labour Party faces division as Apapa's faction introduces a new candidate

Shortly after Barrister Olumide Akpata emerged as the Labour Party candidate for the Edo State governorship election, the faction led by Alhaji Lamidi Apapa has introduced their own candidate for the same election.

As previously reported by GistReel, Akpata was declared the party's candidate in a governorship primary held by Deputy Governor Engr Ikechukwu Emetu of Abia State in Benin City on Friday.

The immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association secured 316 votes, defeating other aspirants to become the candidate.

However, the Apapa-led faction submitted a letter dated February 22, 2024, to the National Chairman of INEC in Abuja, introducing their own candidate and deputy governorship candidate.

The letter, signed by Alhaji Lamidi Apapa as the Acting National Chairman and Alhaji Saleh Lawan as the Acting National Secretary, revealed Barrister Anderson Uwadiae Asemota as the governorship candidate and Barrister Monday Ojore Mawah as the running mate, emerging from a primary in Benin City on February 22, 2024.

When contacted, Apapa confirmed the letter, stating, "Yes, it is true. The letter is from us."
