This announcement was made by the Registrar of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, during a press briefing held at the NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State. Prof. Wushishi revealed that 60.55 per cent of the candidates who sat for the examination achieved five credits or more, including in English Language and Mathematics, a significant metric of academic achievement.

Prof. Wushishi provided detailed statistics about the exam participation, noting that a total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the exam, consisting of 706,950 male candidates and 669,473 female candidates.

Out of those registered, 1,367,736 candidates actually sat for the examination, with 702,112 being males and 665,624 being females.

Prof. Wushishi further disclosed that 828,284 candidates, representing 60.55 per cent, secured five credits and above, including in both English Language and Mathematics. Additionally, the number of candidates who obtained five credits or more in subjects irrespective of English and Mathematics stood at 1,147,597, representing an impressive 83.90 per cent.

He also highlighted a notable decrease in the number of examination malpractices recorded this year compared to the previous year. In 2024, 8,437 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice, a 30.1 per cent reduction from the 12,030 cases reported in 2023.

“The number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2024 is 8,437 as against 12,030 in 2023, which shows a reduction of 30.1 per cent,” he emphasized.

However, the registrar also pointed out that 40 schools were implicated in mass cheating during the examination. He stated, “During the conduct of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), 40 schools were found to have been involved in whole school (mass) cheating in 17 states. These schools will be invited to the Council for discussion, after which appropriate sanctions will be applied.”

He further disclosed that a school in Ekiti State was recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject. In addition, 21 supervisors across 12 states were recommended for blacklisting due to their involvement in poor supervision, aiding and abetting malpractice, abscondment, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence.

Prof. Wushishi urged all candidates who sat for the examination to check their results on the NECO website. He provided instructions for accessing the results, stating, “Candidates can access their results on NECO’s website: www.neco.gov.ng using their examination registration number.”
