During the May 30 sit-at-home protest, unidentified gunmen attacked a military checkpoint at Obikabia junction, resulting in the tragic deaths of the soldiers and the destruction of their patrol vehicle, which was set ablaze.

In response to the incident, Kanu expressed his stance, emphasizing his advocacy for freedom without advocating violence or loss of life.

“Some of these soldiers are our people, and their families are now mourning. The creation of young widows is entirely condemned.

“I don’t wish for anyone to die; our struggle is for freedom, for people to live freely. Across Africa, we have endured immense suffering—from historical slavery in Arabia, Europe, and America. It is time for our continent to rise as God intended.”
