In a statement released late Saturday, Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to the Edo State Government, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the general public to intervene and prevent Shaibu from carrying out what he referred to as a “devious plot.” He expressed concern that such a move could lead to chaos and disrupt public order in the state. Osagie specifically mentioned a previous incident during Shaibu’s attempt to access the Government House, which tragically resulted in the death of a police officer.

“We want to draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police to the intelligence we have gathered regarding a planned move by the erstwhile Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to forcefully enter the Edo State Government House to purportedly enforce the ruling of Justice J. K. Omotosho,” Osagie stated. He underscored the importance of upholding the law, stressing that the appeal process is still ongoing and that any attempt to enter the premises would be unlawful and could further escalate tensions.

“The stay of execution is still pending at the Court of Appeal, and we appeal to the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the state does not descend into anarchy because of the ambition of one man,” Osagie continued. “The last time Shaibu attempted to do this, it led to the death of a police officer. We believe that is one death too many, and it is only wise for us to prevent a repeat of such.”

The Edo State Government has formally notified the Inspector General of Police and other relevant parties about the situation. Their communication emphasized that “all actions relating to the enforcement or execution of the judgment of Honourable Justice J. K. Omotosho in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/478/2024 should be stayed pending the hearing and determination of the Motion for Stay of Execution/Injunction Pending Appeal.”

Osagie further highlighted that the appeal case presents special circumstances that the Court of Appeal should consider. “This will ensure that the plaintiff/respondent, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, does nothing to cause a breach of the peace or a breakdown of law and order in Benin City and Edo State,” he added, reiterating the government's commitment to maintaining peace in the state.

The Edo State Government is urging all parties to respect the legal process and allow the court to resolve the matter peacefully. They stress the importance of adhering to the law and the ongoing judicial proceedings to prevent further unrest in the region.
