Tinubu names ex-INEC chairman, Jega for new position

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the appointment of Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to a new role.

In this capacity, Prof. Jega will serve as the pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Board of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) in Sokoto State.

Prof. Jega’s appointment is part of a larger list of 555 individuals approved by President Tinubu to serve as chairmen and members of governing councils of tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Born on January 11, 1957, Attahiru Jega is a Nigerian academic and former vice-chancellor of Bayero University, Kano.

Previously, on June 8, 2010, he was nominated by then President Goodluck Jonathan as the new Chairman of INEC, succeeding Professor Maurice Iwu. Jega's appointment was subject to Senate confirmation.

Jega retired from his position on June 30, 2015, passing the baton to Amina Zakari as per a directive from President Muhammadu Buhari.
