UNICAL’s first female SUG president, Blessing Alims, has addressed the reasons behind her decision to appoint 50 aides following her assumption of office.
The news stirred significant discussion after it was revealed that the new president of the University of Calabar’s Student Union Government had appointed 50 aides.
In response to the ensuing buzz and online backlash, Alims has defended her decision to appoint such a large number of aides for her administration.
Alims addressed the criticism through her Press Secretary, Madueke Chinenye, and provided clarity on the rationale behind the appointments. She explained that her primary aim was to ensure efficient governance and to address the needs of the University of Calabar’s extensive student body, which includes over 42,000 students across 20 faculties and 110 departments.
“The Students’ Union Government is responsible for the welfare and advancement of our entire university community,” Alims stated. “Just as a single tree does not make a forest, managing a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. It is crucial to have a robust and diverse team to successfully execute our initiatives.”
Alims also highlighted that the positions are unpaid and voluntary, reflecting her commitment to engaging dedicated individuals who are passionate about contributing to the university’s development. “The appointed aides are not financially compensated but are selected to gain experience and contribute meaningfully. Each aide has undergone a thorough screening process by the Senate Committee, taken an Oath of Office, and is motivated to apply their skills and creativity to our administration,” she added.
