The 37-year-old former England international is expected to bring his wealth of experience to the club, which currently holds the sixth position in the Sky Bet Championship.

Rooney will be supported by a coaching staff that includes his former England teammate Ashley Cole, John O'Shea, assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland men's national team, Carl Robinson, and Pete Shuttleworth, who worked with Rooney at D.C. United and Derby County.

Ashley Cole and John O'Shea will maintain their roles with their respective national teams, and Maik Taylor will continue as the Goalkeeper coach.

Rooney began his coaching journey with Derby County in January 2021, where he played a crucial role in helping the team maintain their participation in the Sky Bet Championship. Despite facing a 21-point deduction in his first full season, he led a squad primarily composed of academy players to finish with 55 points.

His tenure at Derby County concluded in June 2022, following which he departed for D.C. United in the United States in July of the same year. Rooney faced challenges in qualifying D.C. United for the play-offs, ultimately reaching a mutual agreement with the club to step down in early October.
