Chelsea have officially announced the loan signing of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, finalizing the deal nearly 21 hours after the transfer window closed.
The agreement includes an obligation for Chelsea to purchase the winger for £23 million. This condition could result in Manchester United facing a significant £50 million loss on Sancho, who was originally acquired for £73 million from Borussia Dortmund.
Sancho, who is 24 years old, expressed his enthusiasm about returning to his hometown of London. In a statement, he said, “I’m really excited to be here. London is where I grew up and I’m happy to be back. The manager spoke to me about the project, and for a young player, it’s exciting. Hopefully, I can bring goals and assists to the Bridge.”
The obligation for Chelsea to buy Sancho will only be triggered if the club finishes above 14th place in the Premier League this season. If Chelsea meet this condition, Sancho will sign a long-term contract with the club.
Despite a challenging period at Manchester United, where Sancho managed only 12 goals in 83 appearances, Chelsea’s management is optimistic about helping him regain his top form.
Sancho’s arrival follows Chelsea’s recent acquisitions of Pedro Neto and Joao Felix in attacking roles and coincides with the departure of Raheem Sterling to Arsenal on a season-long loan.
