English footballer, Mason Greenwood, is set to leave Manchester United following the conclusion of the club's six-month internal inquiry.
The 21-year-old forward had been suspended by the Premier League giants since January 30, 2022, in relation to allegations involving a young woman, after images and videos were circulated online. While the criminal case was eventually dropped, with charges including attempted rape and sexual assault being withdrawn due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence, Greenwood's suspension persisted.
Amid growing societal pressure and after a period of six months, Manchester United has made the decision to part ways with Mason Greenwood.
In a statement released on Monday afternoon, the club stated;
“Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped. Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights, and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible. This has required us to proceed with sensitivity and care to obtain evidence not in the public domain, including from those with direct knowledge of the case.
“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.
“All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
Despite his contract with Manchester United running until June 2025, Greenwood hasn’t been able to play for the team since his arrest in January 2022.
Throughout his time at Manchester United, Greenwood made 129 appearances, netting 35 goals. He was widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in world football and earned one international cap for England. As of now, it remains uncertain where Greenwood will continue his football journey in the future.
