My Journey of Wearing Braces for Five Years

“A dentist at Guy’s hospital told me I didn’t need braces, and I shouldn’t bother trying to get them because my teeth were fine. Undeterred, I finally got braces from Chapel Road Orthodontist in April 2018—a teeth saver.

The first day with braces was painful, with a swollen face. Maintaining them wasn’t easy. I dealt with broken braces, swollen cheeks, and gums. I spent a lot on visits to the hygienist and orthodontist during my university days.

I disliked eating in public or having colored drinks. Elastic bands became part of the routine. The orthodontist knew I was lying about wearing them every day; I even went to an appointment without them once.

In January 2023, I decided to take them off. I was happy with my teeth and tired of braces. I was instructed to wear my retainers daily, and I promised to comply. I got my teeth whitened in Lagos at a more affordable cost than 500 pounds. It was painful, and I couldn’t complete the first session, but I was still happy with the result. I stopped wearing my retainers in May, and I'm glad my teeth still look good.”
