[p]Sources close to President Bola Tinubu have revealed that a deal was made a day before the All Progressives Congress presidential primary to appoint former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio as the President of the Senate.
According to reports by GistReel, the presidential primary took place at the Eagles Square in Abuja between June 6 and 8, 2022, with Tinubu, Akpabio, Rotimi Amaechi, Yemi Osinbajo, and other aspirants vying for the position.
The source disclosed to Sunday PUNCH that Bola Tinubu approached Akpabio a day prior to the primary and requested him to step down in his favor. Tinubu mentioned that if Akpabio agreed, it would send a positive signal to the audience and other aspirants, as Akpabio would be the first to be invited to speak on the podium.
Upon Akpabio's agreement, he expressed his desire to know what he would gain from the situation, considering his resignation as a minister and non-participation as a senatorial aspirant.
In response, Tinubu assured him of his support to become the President of the Senate. During their conversation, an influential woman (whose name was not disclosed) joined them, and that was when the deal was sealed.
