[p]Eyewitnesses say that Temitayo had intervened in a dispute between an individual known as "Egbon Adugbo" and a third party who owed Egbon Adugbo a sum of N4000. Temitayo had promised to settle the debt for the third party but was only able to reimburse N3000 of the outstanding balance. The remaining N1000 was still owed, and this apparently led to an argument which resulted in the fatal attack on Temitayo.

[p]According to the University's Student Union, the perpetrators of the attack were demanding payment for the debt when Temitayo refused, insisting that he did not owe them anything and had only been trying to help out. The argument quickly escalated, and Temitayo was stabbed by the assailants who then proceeded to vandalize the surrounding area.
