Man arrested for setting suspected witch on fire in Bauchi

A 30-year-old man named Hamza Umar has been apprehended by the police in Bauchi State for a heinous act in which he allegedly poured kerosene on a girl and set her on fire, accusing her of being a witch. The Police Public Relations Officer in Bauchi, SP Ahmed Wakil, released a statement regarding the incident.

According to the police, the suspect committed the crime when the victim entered his house in the Rafin Albasa area of Bauchi metropolis, claiming that she was sent by her older sister to harm him. The suspect reportedly tried to make the girl leave his house, but she insisted on burying some charms in the corner of the premises. Enraged by her persistence, the suspect allegedly doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze, alleging that she was a witch.

Upon receiving the information, a team of detectives promptly responded, evacuating the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for immediate medical attention. The police have initiated a discreet investigation to uncover the precise circumstances leading to the incident. The suspect will face charges in court once the investigation is concluded.

SP Ahmed Wakil strongly condemned such barbaric treatment, emphasizing that no one has the right to subject another human being to such brutality.

In a separate development, the police also arrested individuals involved in criminal conspiracy and car theft. Yusuf Muhammed, aged 34, was apprehended by detectives from the 'C' Divisional Police Headquarters in Bauchi. Additionally, a vehicle with registration number AP-675-BAU, a black Pontiac Vibe with chassis number 5428XL62884242598 and a value of N1.5 million, was recovered. The suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime and implicated an accomplice, Mohammed Auwal, who is currently at large.

The investigation into these crimes continues as the police strive to maintain law and order in Bauchi State.
