A Namibian woman, identified as Pauline Mbangula, was apprehended by authorities in South Africa on Sunday after a routine X-ray screening at the airport revealed the presence of drugs inside her stomach. According to reports, Mbangula had been on vacation in Brazil with her Nigerian boyfriend, who allegedly persuaded her to smuggle illegal substances by swallowing capsules of drugs.
The woman, who had flown from Luanda to Brazil with her partner under the guise of a holiday, was later convinced to ingest the drugs before their return to South Africa. Upon their arrival, she was to meet an accomplice, who would supposedly assist her in bypassing security checks at the airport. The identity of this accomplice, however, remains unknown to the police, said Mashadi Selepe, another spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), in an interview with Namibian national broadcaster NBC.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a spokesperson for SAPS, further disclosed to Namibian Sun that Mbangula had managed to expel a total of 68 capsules of suspected cocaine by noon yesterday. She remains under close medical observation to ensure that all capsules are safely removed from her system. Mbangula has not yet been placed in a holding cell due to the ongoing process of drug elimination, according to Brigadier Mathe.
The case has sparked considerable attention due to the involvement of Mbangula’s Nigerian boyfriend, who remains at large, and her alleged role as a drug mule. The authorities are continuing their investigation, while Mbangula is being monitored at a hospital to ensure her safety throughout the process of expelling the drugs.
