Local law enforcement responded to the scene after reports of a shooting were made, and found Yarl outside the residence with gunshot wounds to his head and arm. The teenager was then taken to the hospital and is currently listed as being in stable condition.

After the incident, protesters took to the streets in Kansas City, chanting slogans like “Justice for Ralph” and “Black lives matter”. Demonstrators held signs reading “Ringing a doorbell is not a crime” and “The shooter should do the time”.

Yarl’s family has since retained the services of civil rights attorneys S. Lee Merritt and Benjamin Crump to represent them in legal matters related to the shooting. The identity of the homeowner involved in the shooting has not been disclosed, but they were taken into custody following the incident. However, they were subsequently released pending further investigation to gather more forensic evidence and a formal statement from the victim.
