Kafayat Ajoke, a housewife from Ilorin, has petitioned the court to end her marriage to Aminullahi Ibrahim, citing his failure to provide for their family’s basic needs. According to her, the situation has become untenable due to Aminullahi's inability to fulfill his responsibilities as a provider, leaving her and their children in a state of financial insecurity.
Appearing in court on Friday, she requested that the judge grant her a divorce [/b]and award her custody of their two children. Her plea emphasizes the need for stability and adequate support for her children's well-being, which she claims her husband can no longer ensure.
Additionally, she seeks a monthly maintenance and feeding allowance of N100,000 from her estranged husband. This amount, she argues, is necessary to cover the essential needs of her children and herself, ensuring they have enough food and other basic necessities.

“I noticed that my husband changed after he lost his job one year ago. He does not provide enough money for food for the family. The situation has worsened, and it is no longer sustainable for us to continue living this way.”
In his response to the divorce petition, Aminullahi Ibrahim consented to the dissolution of their marriage but disputed the amount of maintenance and feeding allowance [/b]requested by his wife. He argued that the sum she is demanding is unrealistic given his current financial situation.
He stated that, due to his current unemployment, he is only capable of paying N2,000 monthly for the upkeep of his family, a significantly lower amount than the N100,000 requested by Kafayat Ajoke. He expressed his willingness to support his family within his means, but highlighted the financial constraints he faces due to his job loss.

“I don’t have a job, so I don’t have money. This is the main reason my wife wants a divorce. I am unable to meet her financial demands, and this has created a lot of tension between us.”
Judge Idris Etsu, having heard the testimonies and arguments presented by both Kafayat Ajoke and Aminullahi Ibrahim, deferred the case until July 30 for the delivery of his judgment. The judge will consider the evidence and arguments from both parties before making a decision on the divorce and the requested maintenance allowance.
